ePropulsion Pod Drive 1.0 Evo 1 kW electric pod motor including remote control

The ePropulsion Pod Drive 1.0 Evo is a compact 1 kW electric pod motor for small sailboats and other light vessels. The motor is mounted under the boat. As a result, the motor remains out of sight and no space is lost in the cockpit.

Key features

• Power: 1 kW.
• Comparison with combustion engine: ePropulsion cites a theoretical equivalent of 3 hp. Marinaut practically compares the sailing performance to approx. 2 hp of propulsion power up to 3 hp of thrust. Electric power, thrust, and the power of a combustion engine are not directly convertible.
• Drive: brushless direct-drive DC motor.
• Hydrogeneration: while sailing, the rotating propeller can charge the battery when the conditions in the manual are met.
• Noise and vibration: quiet, low-vibration operation.
• Usage: suitable for fresh and salt water.
• Maintenance: low-maintenance; check the anodes and lubrication points according to the manual.
• Mounting: fixed under the hull. The boat's rudder is normally used for steering.

Which boat is the Pod Drive 1.0 Evo suitable for?

As a practical selection guideline, this pod motor is used to bring boats up to approx. 900 kg to cruising speed and boats up to approx. 300 kg to hull speed. Actual performance depends on hull shape, load, propeller, wind, current, and battery installation.

Control and installation

The top-mount remote control and required communication cables are included at Marinaut. The integrated display shows power, battery status, voltage, and remaining runtime, among other things.

• Top-mount remote control: product number NE-RC00-00, weight 0.7 kg and a 3.4-inch display.
• Connection: wireless up to 10 meters or wired up to 15 meters.
• Safety wristbands: up to eight wristbands can be paired.
• Other control: side-mount and dual Evo remote controls are available as options.

With two pod motors, the dual Evo remote control allows for joint or individual control. By having the motors rotate differently or in opposite directions, the boat can maneuver more easily at low speeds.

Battery and cabling

The battery is not included. Possible combinations are:

• ePropulsion Spirit Plus 1.3 kWh battery with connection cable for Pod 1.0 Evo, article number 00-0601-25, price €165.
• A 48 V ePropulsion E-Series battery, for example the E80 of 4.1 kWh, with external E-Series battery cable of 1.5 meters, article number 00-0601-08, price €159.

Runtime and range are not specified as fixed values. They depend on battery capacity, speed, boat, load, and conditions.

Folding propeller for sailboats

For sailboats, a two-blade NAB folding propeller is available. The propeller reduces resistance while sailing and supports hydrogeneration under the prescribed conditions.

Steerable Rudder Drive

The Pod Drive 1.0 Evo can be mounted as a steerable pod motor in a rudder blade. This Rudder Drive is also suitable for a hybrid installation. While sailing with the combustion engine, the pod can generate power via hydrogeneration under suitable conditions.

• Dimensions: A 575 mm, B 60 mm, and C 600 mm. Different sizes are possible on request.
• Rudder Drive: €1,215.
• Folding propeller and extra bracket for higher speeds: €295.
• Rudder shaft of 275 mm for a 30 mm axle: €459.

According to Marinaut, this construction has been successfully tested on an Antaris with a 200 hp diesel engine.

Hybrid mounting on a combustion outboard motor

The pod motor can also be mounted in a dual-rudder behind a combustion outboard motor. This allows for local electric sailing, for example in Amsterdam or Haarlem. The pod motor remains detachable. The dual-rudder can also improve maneuverability at low speed and directional stability.
