Tohatsu MFS50A 4-stroke outboard motor

Tohatsu's 4-stroke models are equipped with modern technology. These Tohatsu outboard motors are reliable and feature robust technology that is easy to use. The MFS 50 is the first model in the new Tohatsu lightweight Sporty ECO line. This is one of the lightest 4-stroke outboard motors in its class.

This outboard motor is suitable for water sports; for water skiing, wakeboarding, or wakefoiling (for boats with speeds starting from 20 km/h for beginners up to 35 km/h for advanced users).

As a rule of thumb, for fast-planing boats, you need 1 hp for every 10 to 20 kilograms of total weight. Based on this, this outboard motor is suitable for a total weight of 500 to 1000 kilograms.
For displacement hulls, 1 hp per 150 to 200 kilograms is sufficient; in that case, the engine is adequate for 7.5 to 10 tons of total weight.

Sea trials and reviews

  • Test 1 – Boten.nl, Oud Huijzer 616: the test boat was equipped with a 50 hp Tohatsu. The engine was described as remarkably smooth and quiet. On nearly flat and calm water, the boat easily came onto plane. At half throttle, the boat sailed at approximately 20 km/h; at full throttle, the top speed was around 42 km/h.
  • Test 2 – Boten.nl, Topcraft 605: the 50 hp Tohatsu was described as suitable motorization for water sports enthusiasts who want to sail faster. The engine weighs less than 100 kg, and in this test, the Topcraft 605 achieved a top speed of approximately 50 km/h.
  • Test 3 – Tohatsu Australia, Clark Abalone 435: test weight approx. 750 kg. At 3,500 rpm, approx. 27 km/h was measured with a consumption of 5 l/h. At 6,300 rpm, approx. 55 km/h was measured with a consumption of 16 l/h.
  • Test 4 – Topcraft 565: with a boat weight of approx. 600 kg, a top speed of about 45 km/h was measured with 50 hp.
  • Lago Amore 600: with a boat weight of approx. 750 kg, about 45 km/h was achieved.
  • Oud Huijzer 616: with a boat weight of approx. 600 kg, well over 35 km/h was achieved.
  • Test 5 – Lago Amore 633: with a boat weight of approx. 800 kg, about 40 km/h was achieved.
  • Test 6 – Van Zutphen 633: with a boat weight of approx. 700 kg, about 40 km/h was achieved.
  • Test 7 – Van Vossen 777: with a boat weight of approx. 1,000 kg, about 34 km/h was achieved.
  • Test 8 – Topcraft 565: with a boat weight of approx. 550 kg, well over 50 km/h was achieved.
  • Test 9 – Amigo 475 Sport: with a boat weight of approx. 410 kg, about 51 km/h was achieved.
  • Test 10 – Tridente 19S: with a boat weight of approx. 580 kg, about 48 km/h was achieved.

The speeds mentioned are practical values. Ultimate performance depends on factors including loading, propeller choice, engine mounting, weather conditions, and the waterway.
