Tohatsu 30 HP Outboard Motor MFS30D

Tohatsu 30 HP Outboard Motor MFS30D

Tohatsu MFS30D 4-stroke outboard motor

A high-performing and user-friendly engine.

New features such as variable idle speed, a front-mounted shift lever, and a water flush system ensure a smooth, stable outboard motor that is also quick and easy to clean after use in saltwater.

The newly optimized gear ratio (26:12 / 2.17) delivers more power and torque, resulting in the highest top speed among 25/30 hp 4-stroke engines. This performance also results in fuel savings and a wider range of applications than other brands.

A rule of thumb is that for fast boats, you need 1 hp for a total weight of 10 to 20 kilograms. Based on this, this outboard motor is suitable for a total weight of 300 to 600 kilograms.
For displacement boats, 1 hp per 150 to 200 kilograms is sufficient; then the engine is adequate for 4.5 to 6 tons of total weight.

Fast Tohastsu MFS30D engine suitable for water sports and suitable for water skiing or wakeboarding (for boats with a speed from 20 kilometers per hour for beginners up to 35 kilometers per hour for advanced users).

  1. Review test report 1 : The new Tohatsu MFS30D is the lightest 3-cylinder engine in its class. This one certainly impressed with power, weight, and economy. The attached Test data demonstrated what customers can expect from this Next Generation engine: lightweight, performance, and fuel economy. A top speed of 50 kilometers (31 mph) was achieved with a 420-liter boat.

  2. Test report 2 (see video below): with a 495 sloop With the Tohatsu 30 hp outboard motor a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour is achieved.

  3. Test report 3 review by boote-magazin.de February 2022: The comparison test covers the new Tohatsu MFS30D and the older MFS 30C.
The biggest visual difference between the two engines lies in the shape of the hood: the new model adopts Tohatsu's so-called softer design language. Under the hood, the latest technology aligns with upcoming emissions regulations, making it future-proof. Another key feature is that the new Tohatsu mfs30d engine can operate smoothly and without loss of performance with the now-familiar ethanol additives.
The main differences in the technical data are the smaller displacement of the new engine and especially the almost 20 percent lower weight. At 57 kilograms, the new engine is, according to the manufacturer, the lightest three-cylinder in its class. This is essentially achieved with a 40 percent lighter crankshaft and a composite intake manifold that weighs only about half as much as the head (made of cast aluminum) of the older model. Of course, lighter weight has advantages when it comes to transport and handling—like dragging the engine across the beach and then attaching it to a dinghy.
As a "test bench" for our test, Robert Marx obtained two identical Sandstrom Classic 460s from the boat dealer Kieler Bootsschau. Both boats had exactly the same equipment and therefore the same weight. We sailed the boats with two people; the test area was the Elbe, so it was naturally necessary to measure the speed in both directions. Both models reach approximately the same speeds, and they should, since the gear ratio and propeller are identical. At top speed, we achieved slightly more speed with the new model. A similar picture emerges with the noise levels, and here the differences are very minor. The fuel consumption is particularly interesting for us water sports enthusiasts: except for 1,000 rpm, the differences between the old and new engines remained small. At the upper speeds from 5,000 rpm, slightly lower consumption was calculated. At speeds between 2,000 rpm and 4,500 rpm, the older engine was even more fuel-efficient. The economical speed range of our test duo is between 5,000 and 5,500 rpm. Acceleration is still lacking: Here we measured with the current and without using the power trim (With power trim, you can electronically optimize the trim angle for improved acceleration, higher speed, and stable handling. Also useful for trailering.) Accelerated to 35 kilometers per hour . Most of you probably already guessed that there was no real winner here either.
Conclusion: The new 30 hp outboard motor impresses with its forward-thinking technology and low weight, making it incredibly easy to handle, even on lightweight boats. The weight savings are also a plus when it comes to handling.

  4. With the Pure 585 from Pure Boating with a displacement of 530 kilograms including outboard motor You'll be sailing with a 30 hp outboard motor at a top speed of 45 kilometers per hour. The Pure 585's design allows you to cruise quickly and quietly with relatively little power. It's fuel-efficient and has lower maintenance costs. One of the standout features of this innovative hull shape is its efficiency in the 12-20 km/h speed range, ideal for times when you don't want to go too fast but still want to make progress. Many boats create a large wake at this speed, leading to higher fuel consumption and more noise. The 585 makes the transition from displacement to planing almost imperceptibly. At a speed of 18 km/h, the engine consumes only 4 liters per hour with 2-3 people on board, which equates to 0.4 L/nm—unique for a boat of almost 6 meters. The boat also planes easily with six people on board.

  5. River Roto including outboard motor and fuel 320 kilograms: a top speed of 47 kilometers per hour, with two adults 40 kilometers per hour.

  6. With an Amigo 475 Sport with a boat weight of 410 kilograms, you can sail with a 30 hp outboard motor at a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour.

  7. With a 495 sloop weighing 340 kilograms, the 30 hp Tohatsu outboard motor will reach a speed of 35 kilometers per hour. With eight people, it can reach a speed of 18 kilometers per hour.

  8. With the Valory V490 sloop with a boat weight of 320 kilograms, you can reach a speed between 28 and 36 kilometers per hour with the 30 hp outboard motor with 1 to 2 people.

  9. The 540 sloop with 425 kilograms boat weight has a top speed of 35 to 40 kilometers per hour with the 30 hp outboard motor .

  10. With the Lago Amore 595 tender , weighing 500 kilograms, you can sail with a 30 hp outboard motor up to a maximum speed of 35 kilometers per hour. With eight people, you can travel at 14 kilometers per hour.

  11. With the Gentle 590 tender With a boat weighing 500 kilograms, you can sail with a 30 hp outboard motor at a maximum speed of 35 kilometers per hour. With eight people, you can sail at 14 kilometers per hour.

  12. With a 320-kilogram Lago Amore 485 sloop, you can sail with a 30-hp outboard motor at a top speed of 35 kilometers per hour. With 8 people, it can reach 14 kilometers per hour (though with 4 people, the sloop will still plane).

  13. With a Beauty 630 tender with a boat weight of 500 kilograms, you can sail with a 30 hp outboard motor at a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

  14. With the Marinaut 620 with a boat weight of 620 kilograms, you can sail with 2 people up to a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour.

  15. With an Old Huijzer 616 Tender Sloop 6 meters With a boat weight of 690 kilograms, you can sail with 2 people up to a maximum speed of 28 kilometers per hour.

  16. With the Topcraft 605 Tendersloep with a boat weight of 600 kilograms and 2 persons you can sail with a 30 hp Tohatsu outboard motor up to a maximum speed of 28 kilometers per hour.

  17. With the Lago Amore 633 Tendersloep 6.5 meters 8 persons with 780 kilograms boat weight and 2 persons you sail with a 30 hp outboard motor at a maximum speed of 18 kilometers per hour (with 4 persons 17 kilometers per hour), with a tailwind 27 kilometers per hour.
