Tohatsu 30 HP Outboard Motor MFS30D

Tohatsu 30 HP Outboard Motor MFS30D

Tohatsu MFS30D 4-stroke outboard motor

A high-performance and user-friendly engine.

New features such as: variable idle speed, front-mounted gear shift lever, and water flushing system ensure a quiet and stable-running outboard motor that is also quick and easy to clean after use in saltwater.

The newly optimized gear ratio (26:12 / 2.17) provides more power and torque, leading to the highest top speed among 25/30 hp 4-stroke engines. This performance also results in fuel savings and a wider range of applications than other brands.

As a rule of thumb, for fast-planing boats, you need 1 hp for every 10 to 20 kilograms of total weight. Based on this, this outboard motor is suitable for a total weight of 300 to 600 kilograms. For displacement boats, 1 hp per 150 to 200 kilograms is sufficient; then the engine is adequate for 4.5 to 6 tons of total weight.

The fast Tohatsu MFS30D engine is suitable for water sports and for waterskiing or wakeboarding (for boats with speeds from 20 kilometers per hour for beginners to 35 kilometers per hour for advanced users).

  1. Review test report 1: The new Tohatsu MFS30D is the lightest 3-cylinder engine in its class. It certainly impressed with its power, weight, and economy. The attached test information demonstrated what customers can expect from this Next Generation engine. Lightweight, performance, and fuel economy. With a 420 boat, a top speed of 50 kilometers was achieved.

  2. Test report 2 (see video below): with a 495 sloop, a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour is achieved with the Tohatsu 30 hp outboard motor.

  3. Test report 3 review by boote-magazin.de February 2022: The comparison test concerns the new Tohatsu MFS30D and the older MFS 30C.
The biggest external difference between the two engines is the shape of the engine cover: Tohatsu has given the new model a softer design language. Under the hood is the latest technology that makes the engine suitable for upcoming emission standards and thus future-proof. Another important point is that the new Tohatsu MFS30D engine can run smoothly and without performance loss with the now common ethanol additives.
The main differences in the technical data are the smaller displacement of the new engine and especially the almost 20 percent lower weight. At 57 kilograms, the new engine is, according to the manufacturer, the lightest three-cylinder in its class. This is essentially achieved with a 40 percent lighter crankshaft and a plastic intake manifold that weighs only about half as much as the head (made of cast aluminum) of the older model. Of course, less weight has advantages when it comes to transport and handling - such as dragging it across the beach and then attaching the engine to an inflatable boat.
As a "test bench" for our test, Robert Marx had acquired two identical Sandstrom Classic 460s from the boat dealer Kieler Bootsschau. Both boats had exactly the same equipment and thus the same weight. We sailed the boats with two people, the test area was the Elbe, which naturally makes it necessary to measure the speed in both directions. Both models achieve approximately the same speeds, and that should of course also be the case, since the gear ratio and propeller are identical. At top speed, we achieved a slightly higher speed with the new model. A similar picture emerges with the noise levels, and here the differences are very small. Especially for us water sports enthusiasts, fuel consumption is interesting: except for 1,000 rpm, the differences between the old and new engines remained small. At the upper speeds from 5,000 rpm, a slightly lower consumption was calculated. At speeds between 2,000 rpm and 4,500 rpm, the older engine was even more economical. The economical speed range of our test duo is between 5,000 and 5,500 rpm. The acceleration is still missing: Here we measured with the current and without using the powertrim (With powertrim you can electronically optimize the trim angle for improved acceleration, higher speed and stable position. Also useful for trailering.) Accelerated to 35 kilometers per hour. Most of you probably already guessed that there was no real winner here either.
Conclusion The new 30 hp outboard motor impresses with its future-oriented technology and its low weight, making it super easy to control even on light boats. The weight saving is also an advantage when it comes to handling the engine.

  4. With the Pure 585 from Pure Boating with a displacement of 530 kilograms including outboard motor, you sail with a 30 hp outboard motor at a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour. The design of the Pure 585 offers the possibility to sail quickly and quietly with relatively little power. It is fuel-efficient and has lower maintenance costs. One of the striking features of this innovative hull shape is its efficiency in the speed range of 12 to 20 kilometers per hour, ideal for moments when you don't want to go too fast, but still want to move forward. Many boats create a large stern wave at this speed, which leads to higher consumption and more noise. The 585 makes the transition from displacement to planing almost imperceptible. At a speed of 18 kilometers per hour, the engine consumes only 4 liters per hour with 2-3 people on board, which amounts to 0.4 L/nm—unique for a boat of almost 6 meters. The boat also easily planes with six people on board.

  5. River Roto including outboard motor and fuel 320 kilograms: a top speed of 47 kilometers per hour, with two adults 40 kilometers per hour.

  6. With an Amigo 475 Sport with a boat weight of 410 kilograms, you sail with a 30 hp outboard motor at a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour.

  7. With a 495 sloop with a boat weight of 340 kilograms, a speed of 35 kilometers per hour is achieved with the Tohatsu 30 HP outboard motor. With 8 people, you reach a speed of 18 kilometers per hour.

  8. With the Valory V490 sloop with a boat weight of 320 kilograms, you achieve a speed between 28 and 36 kilometers per hour with 1 to 2 people with the 30 hp outboard motor.

  9. The 540 sloop with a boat weight of 425 kilograms has a top speed of 35 to 40 kilometers per hour with the 30 hp outboard motor.

  10. With the Lago Amore 595 tender with a boat weight of 500 kilograms, you sail with a 30 hp outboard motor up to a maximum speed of 35 kilometers per hour. With 8 people, you sail at 14 kilometers per hour.

  11. With the Gentle 590 tender with a boat weight of 500 kilograms, you sail with a 30 hp outboard motor up to a maximum speed of 35 kilometers per hour. With 8 people, you sail at 14 kilometers per hour.

  12. With a Lago Amore 485 sloop with a boat weight of 320 kilograms, you sail with a 30 hp outboard motor at a maximum speed of 35 kilometers per hour. And with 8 people, 14 kilometers per hour - with 4 people, the sloop still planes).

  13. With a Beauty 630 tender with a boat weight of 500 kilograms, you sail with a 30 hp outboard motor at a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

  14. With the Marinaut 620 with a boat weight of 620 kilograms, you sail with 2 people up to a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour.

  15. With an Oud Huijzer 616 Tendersloop 6 meter with a boat weight of 690 kilograms, you sail with 2 people up to a maximum speed of 28 kilometers per hour.

  16. With the Topcraft 605 Tendersloop with a boat weight of 600 kilograms and 2 people, you sail with a 30 hp Tohatsu outboard motor up to a maximum speed of 28 kilometers per hour.
