New features such as: variable idle speed, front-mounted shift lever, and freshwater flushing system ensure a quiet and smooth-running outboard motor that is also quick and easy to clean after use in salt water.

The newly optimized gear ratio (26:12 / 2.17) provides more power and torque and, according to Tohatsu, was developed for strong performance within the 25/30 hp class. The optimized gear ratio is aimed at a good combination of acceleration, top speed, and efficiency.

As a rule of thumb, for fast-planing boats, you need 1 hp per 10 to 20 kilograms of total weight. Based on this, this outboard is suitable for 300 to 600 kilograms of total weight.
For displacement boats, 1 hp per 150 to 200 kilograms is sufficient; in that case, the engine is adequate for 4.5 to 6 tons of total weight.

Fast Tohatsu MFS30D engine suitable for watersports and ideal for waterskiing or wakeboarding (for boats with speeds starting from 20 km/h for beginners to 35 km/h for advanced riders).

Sea trials and reviews

1. Review 1 – Tohatsu MFS30D: Tohatsu positions the MFS30D as the lightest three-cylinder engine in its class. In the test data, the low weight, performance, and fuel consumption were particularly notable. A top speed of approximately 50 km/h was measured with a 420-size boat.
2. Test 2 – 495-tender: a top speed of approximately 40 km/h was measured with a Tohatsu 30 hp outboard.
3. Test 3 – Boote-Magazin, February 2022: in this comparison, the new MFS30D was tested against the older MFS30C. The new engine has a different cowl, a smaller displacement, and is nearly 20% lighter. At 57 kg, the MFS30D was, according to the manufacturer, the lightest three-cylinder in its class. The weight savings are partly due to a lighter crankshaft and a plastic intake manifold. Two identical Sandström Classic 460 boats were tested on the Elbe with two people on board. Both engines achieved virtually the same speeds; the new MFS30D was slightly faster at top speed. The noise level also differed very little. From about 5,000 rpm, the fuel consumption of the new engine was slightly lower, while the older engine was slightly more economical between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. The most favorable rpm range was around 5,000–5,500 rpm. Without Power Trim, approximately 35 km/h was achieved during the acceleration test. The review concluded that the MFS30D stands out primarily for its modern technology and low weight, which makes handling the engine easier.
4. Pure 585: with a displacement of approximately 530 kg including engine and three people, about 45 km/h was achieved with 30 hp. Around 18 km/h, a consumption of about 4 l/h was noted with two to three people on board. The boat also planed easily with six people on board, according to the test.
5. River Roto: approximately 320 kg including outboard and fuel; top speed approximately 47 km/h and approximately 40 km/h with two adults.

Versions

The transom height of the boat determines the required shaft length. Around 43 cm, a short shaft is usually suitable, around 51 cm a long shaft, and around 63 cm an extra-long shaft.

Power Trim & Tilt

With Power Trim & Tilt, you can electrically adjust the angle of the outboard motor while underway. Proper trim can improve acceleration, stability, and fuel economy. The engine can also be easily tilted up for shallow water or transport on a trailer.

Trim gauge: optional for ET versions for €429, including trim sensor 3KY-72575-0 and cable 3T1-72573-0 (trim gauge 3VS-72685-0).

Engine control and intake

The 16-bit ECU controls fuel injection and ignition timing. The tuned intake manifold is developed for extra torque at low to mid-range speeds. The tubular air intake supports airflow and helps keep water out of the engine cowl.
